Battlefield 2 in the test - the best multiplayer shooter
An outstanding leader needs intelligence, credibility, humanity, courage and rigor. Says Sun Tzu from China. He wrote The Art of War. In the past two millennia, countless generals have tested his theories and come to the conclusion: »Right! The book is brilliant! «.
A good leader also needs artillery, unmanned reconnaissance threats, radar scans, and relief supplies. My digital illusions from Sweden. They developed Battlefield 2 . In the past two weeks, countless GameStar editors have tested their theories and come to the conclusion: »That's right! The game is brilliant! ”Sun Tzu managed to convey his collected theories about the war in only around 60,000 German characters. We can top that: We squeeze our concentrated knowledge of Battlefield 2 into just 12,400 letters and explain to you what makes the game our new action reference.
First row, middle
High-ranking military leaders are valuable and therefore sit in comfortable radio vehicles far from the front. Certainly pleasant for generals, but boring for shooter fans.
This was also what Digital Illusions (Dice) thought, and rejected their first concept of the new Commander mode. A few weeks ago it was said that the commander-in-chief would not take part in the battle as a fighter, but would act as a pure strategist. In the finished Battlefield 2 , however, things look different: As a commander, you now storm across the battlefield with the normal soldiers! However, only you have access to the ingenious additional options: At the push of a button, a map overview opens in which all the friendly troops are drawn. With a practical menu, you can use radar scanning at regular intervals to uncover all enemy units in the combat area, send out espionage threats, drop relief supplies with ammunition and medi-packs and order devastating artillery strikes. This is all done easily and quickly with just a few clicks. That's a good thing, because in commander mode the commander-in-chief doesn't notice his surroundings and is an easy target for enemy fighters.
Black Hawk up
If light wagons appear first and occupy the flanks, the enemy stands up to fight, says Sun Tzu. Battlefield 2 offers much more than just light cars: inflatables, tanks, helicopters and even jet fighters. Because instead of historical battles you experience fictitious modern battles between the USA, China and the Arab coalition MEC in the tried and tested Conquest mode.
The fleet and weapon systems are state-of-the-art in military technology: jets hunt for helicopters with heat-seeking missiles, helicopters take tanks with camera-guided projectiles under fire, and troop carriers hide behind opaque clouds of smoke. Controls and driving physics could have come from a simulation: The suspensions of the jeeps give way realistically springy when you chase across sunny beaches with a rattling engine.
The helicopters represent the ideal mix of easy operation and playful challenges. With the WASD buttons you control lift and rudder, with the mouse you tilt the helicopter in the direction you want to fly. This is easier than in Battlefield Vietnam, but much more difficult than in joint operations. But the sense of achievement is all the greater if, after a few minutes of practice with the Black Hawk helicopter, you make steep turns through Arabian canyons.
Rank and name
Who becomes a commander depends on the rank: battles in which you participate are evaluated by an online ranking system. For each enemy that a player kills, he receives one point. So far, nothing new.
Battlefield 2 also has teamwork rewards. This is where Dice copied from the competitor Joint Operations : If, for example, as a helicopter pilot you are driving around teammates or rushing to the aid of a troubled comrade, there are assistance points. The values are added, entered in an online ranking list and translated into military ranks. If two players apply for the Commander post at the same time, the higher ranking person will be given priority. However, this is by no means a job for life: every player can call for mutiny once every two minutes. When half of the team rebels against the commander, he is off the window. He can only apply for the post again after five minutes.

The glory seven
Before you choose to become a commander, choose a soldier class. There are seven of them in Battlefield 2 : The assault soldier forms the backbone of the three armies. With his grenade launcher, he preferred to target enemy infantry. The anti-tank gunner is responsible for vehicles. Although his submachine gun is weaker than his colleagues' assault rifles, his steerable rockets make tank drivers fear for this: if a vehicle is aimed at the bazooka, a threatening chirp sounds.
However, the Special Forces soldier strikes unexpectedly. The attaches highly explosive C4 to vehicles and ignites it from a safe distance by radio. When we are lying in wait next to a bridge, the commander warns us of approaching tanks. We whiz on the flyover, lay out five explosive charges and hide under the bridge with the remote detonator. When we hear chains crunching above us, we press the trigger. Bad surprise: the bridges in Battlefield 2 are destructible! Two burning tanks and tons of rubble fall on our squad ...
Not only bridges, but also the Commander's toys are the target of the Special Forces: radar, artillery and drone control station are on the cards. If they are blown up, the respective aid fails - until a pioneer comes by. It brings vehicles and installations back on track.
The paramedic takes care of injured soldiers. Probably the most important fighter from Battlefield 1942 was missing from Battlefield Vietnam , but learned something while on vacation: With his defibrillator, he brought comrades back to life. The Sani also distributes first aid packages - medicine cabinets like those in Battlefield 1942 no longer exist. You won't find ammunition boxes either. Instead, supply soldiers provide supplies: they put cartridge belts on their comrades. The sniper cannot get enough ammunition, because there are plenty of isolated places with a free field of fire in Battlefield 2: high-rise buildings, chimneys, even construction cranes serve as perfect sniper positions.
Brothers in Arms
A good general commands a group that can be controlled like a single individual who has no other choice, says Sun Tzu.
In Battlefield 2 , every soldier has a specialty, but everyone is dependent on one another: a sniper without ammunition is just as useless as a foot-injured grenadier or a broken tank. Therefore, the players organize themselves in groups. With just a click of the mouse, you create such a »squad«, which five comrades can join. The Squad founder automatically becomes the group leader. He serves as a mobile starting point for his subordinates and makes inquiries to the commander-in-chief via a menu that is similar to Commander mode. So he requests espionage threats, artillery strikes or relief supplies. In the same way, the commander gives the squads orders such as "attack here!" Or "lay mines there!" If the group leader accepts his assignment at the push of a button, an on-screen symbol and a colored smoke grenade guide him to the mission. If the commander agrees to an inquiry, a drone is sent on the spot, a fire command is issued or a care package is dropped. This is how Battlefield 2 creates a perfect team game.
Forget annoying F-key picking - in Battlefield 2 , the spoken radio messages you send to teammates are organized in a ring-shaped menu that opens in the middle of the screen at the touch of a button. You can send warnings or calls for help in a fraction of a second.
If the pre-prepared messages are not meaningful enough, use the built-in Voice-over-IP system and talk to your comrades without interference. Clan players in particular are celebrating such good opportunities for cooperation. But this also works on public servers, because the ranking system that rewards teamwork not only brings advantages when choosing a Commander: those who have collected enough points get smart orders and unlock additional weapons - one per class. The pioneer then runs over the battlefield with a fully automatic boom instead of a repeating shotgun. This ensures enormous long-term motivation.
To know your enemy, you have to become your enemy, says Sun Tzu. This is not a problem in Battlefield 2 : the perfect balance of the three parties and the classes with each other means that you can switch jobs and sides without any worries.
There is no privileged nation like that in Battlefield Vietnam , in which the planes of the Americans are superior to those of the Vietnamese. Nevertheless, not all fighters play the same thing: The Chinese sniper, for example, uses a semi-automatic rifle that shoots faster but does less damage than the bolt action rifle of the American. Unlike in the predecessors, in which Allied / American troops were marked in blue and German / Vietnamese soldiers in red, the opposing team in Battlefield 2 always has red names, and their own team always blue. Absolutely logical and, after a short familiarization period, much easier than the old system.
According to the rules of the art of war, there are nine types of terrain, says Sun Tzu. In Battlefield 2 there are even twelve - twelve battlefields, from a dam construction site in the Arabian desert to the foggy swamps of Mongolia.
Each card is available in three versions, for 16, 32 or 64 players. In single player mode, you move into the field with seven bots. The AI opponents are unusually keen on hopeless hand-to-hand combat, but otherwise behave cleverly and listen to their word when you give orders. The Commander post is open to you at any time, but if you prefer to go alone as a lone fighter, a bot will take command. Battlefield 2's solo mode does not come with a single-player campaign, but is sufficient for a small war in between. It is even ideal as a training ground for the "real" battles on the Internet or local network.
Not only the weapon selection, but also the graphics of Battlefield 2 are state of the art. There are special details in the player models: every piece of equipment that the realistic animated soldiers use is actually visible on the fighter.
If you can't get enough of it, Battlefield 2 offers an exciting tool: the Battle Recorder. For each match you host online, a file with all game information is saved on the respective server. You can download them and watch the battle as a repeat in freely selectable camera perspectives. You can admire particularly spectacular scenes in slow motion or as a three-dimensional still image. If desired, Battlefield 2 exports game scenes as an AVI video clip for archiving on your hard drive. However, there is no rewind function and an easy-to-use graphical user interface in the Battle Recorder.
The sound of Battlefield 2 is just as breathtaking as the graphics: artillery strikes vibrate the boxes, never before have there been such realistic shot noises. Each weapon differs significantly from the others: you can hear exactly whether friend or enemy is shooting - not only because of the excellent positioning. But to enjoy Battlefield 2 in all its glory, you need strong hardware. But this investment is definitely worth it for multiplayer fans. Sun Tzu says: "Truly whoever does not fight wins." But he didn't know this game either.

The review was based on the PC version.
It cannot be said that civilization is not developing. After all, in every new war they kill people in an improved way. - Will Rogers
Do you know Trauma Studios? This small development studio created a fashion for Battlefield 1942 , called Desert Combat . He transported us to the Middle East, along with modern equipment. Players without any criticism accepted the modification, because the location of the action in the territories of Arab countries turned out to be the right move. Battlefield had several additions that left a slight hunger and one delicious - Vietnam - which deserved to be called a sequel. After fighting with Vietcong, everyone started counting down the time until the next part appeared. In the meantime, there were some scuffles when EA purchased the DICE stake. The first ones, however, took Trauma Studios under their wings. The goal was obvious - to create a game similar to Desert Combat , but with greater momentum and possibilities. The cooperation did not last long. Talent programmers of the mentioned mod have been removed from the design of the new part of Battlefield , only their ideas and concept for gameplay remain. Rozbrat did not mean the cessation of work on the game. DICE took advantage of the situation and completed the work. The whole story is complicated, as you will admit. Just whom to congratulate? It is hard to point out the real father of the program, but it is nice to see that after so many perturbations the "child" saw the light of day.
Battlefield 2 raises doubts at the beginning. Namely, only one mode is available. I calm all opponents of this idea. Conquest Mode is the essence of this game. You can see that DICE focused on one good mode instead of several with medium playability. So we are dealing with an extremely refined gameplay, which has no right to wear. Conquest was known in the previous parts of the series, so no one will be surprised by its content. Again, we must occupy the flags that will serve as weldable. Both teams are equipped with a certain number of tickets (tickets). The losers are those who will not be a single coupon. The opponent loses them when we manage to control more than half of all flags on the map. There may be a situation where the enemy has no spawn, so no soldier killed in his team will have the opportunity to be reborn. The opposite situation may also occur, which I do not wish to anyone.
The action itself was set in the Middle East and Asia in the near future. There are three sides to the game: the Americans, the Middle East Coalition and the Chinese. They differ in their equipment. We have at our disposal over 30 vehicles and more or less the same types of weapons (some of them must be unlocked by playing on ranked servers). A good balance is good balance of power. Each faction has strong and weak vehicles. It is only up to the player how to effectively use the potential of the unit. So on the American side we have such means of transport as Humvee or UH-60 BlackHawk. The M1A2 Abrams tank will help us in the attack on the enemy, and the AH-1Z Super Cobra will take care of aerial support. Of course, it's just the tip of the iceberg, because I didn't mention the planes. Arab soldiers are not lagging behind. Their air forces are based on Russian technological achievements. So we can get into Havoc and wreak havoc on the enemy base. Su-34 Flanker is great for fast action and bombing, and dominance in the air is ensured by Mig-29 Fulcrum. The majority of the People's Republic of China consists of ground vehicles. They have a Su-30 plane or a WZ-10 combat helicopter, but when playing with Chinese it is worth using tanks and transporters. Balance of strength prefers the player's individual skills. I am glad that the above vehicles do not have titanium coatings.
The types of weapons available are not bad in the game. Americans still have the "immortal" M16, which through appropriate modification transform into M16 / M203 with a grenade launcher. The engineer's armament looks a bit pathetic here. His Remington 11-87 shotgun allows him to fight only a short distance. The calculation of the armaments of Chinese soldiers can be started with the AK-47, which is a standard rifle in the state of the army. For medium-range weapons, the Type-85 SMG and Type-95 Rifle are extremely effective. A coalition has some interesting toys. I will mention only the dream weapon for snipers - Dragunov - and RPK-74 MG. It is a pity that at the beginning each character class has a choice of one weapon. You can discuss realism. Some will find simplifications within 10 minutes of interacting with the program, while others will not mind. The first example from the edge - the sniper rifle gives a stable image, and with the M16 there is no characteristic recoil after the shot. In this aspect, America's Army fares better. However, given the pace of the game, this is a plus. Why hinder the basic assumptions on which the game is based?
As in the previous parts, here we have a choice of professions. There are 7 of them: sniper, mechanic, support soldier, paramedic, grenadier, commando and a stormtrooper. They differ in the weapons they use and the functions they perform on the team. I don't need to explain who the paramedic and sniper are. Let's focus on the rest of the classes. The mechanic is endowed with the ability to repair everything that is damaged. Can rebuild damaged bridges. A support soldier supports offensive forces. As the only class he can carry a heavy machine gun with him. In addition, he takes care of the amount of ammunition and distributes it to all players nearby. Grenadier has an anti-tank rocket launcher. The commando and the stormtrooper are typically offensive classes. The first one has C4 charges, so it can destroy these bridges and enemy radars. The stormtrooper is great in situations where an attack on an enemy flag is required. The commandant is a separate unit. This is the most demanding "fucha". To perform this function, it is recommended to choose a responsible player who can quickly orientate on the battlefield. His role is to command all teams during the match. We have an overview of the entire map, and thanks to satellite scans we can track the enemy and then warn our subordinates. The commandant is the only one who can summon artillery fire and provide supply drops, thanks to which our soldiers can fill empty magazines.
In the control method, not much has changed. I have to mention one thing that has undergone quite a serious transformation - communication. Now it is more intuitive and comfortable. Two commands and a mouse button are enough to issue orders. So it can be concluded that the game is extremely flexible in terms of communication. There is also the option of talking through the microphone, which even better affects the mutual understanding of players.
The driving and flight model is still pure arcade. BF 2 is far from the simulators. This is not a disadvantage, as the game itself is geared to mass fun and it would be difficult for players to adapt to operate 20 keys. For those willing to use the joystick, which will certainly simplify the control and contribute to getting even more pleasure from the game.
What would Battlefield 2 be without a team game? Simple and ordinary online shooter. Team is what tigers like the most, and what I missed forever in all the titles I had the opportunity to play (maybe except Operation Flashpoint ). This problem has been solved perfectly. When you feel the role of a band member, woe to you. :-) You won't get away from the monitor for a few nice hours until you feel your stomach choking because of hunger. Team play has been refined to the maximum, and it consists of dividing into divisions with a maximum of 6 people in their ranks. Joint patrolling the area, massive offensive, dramatic defense with a companion alongside ... uh, it can't be described. The level of adrenaline increases when we are elected a squad leader and we have to complete the tasks outlined by the commandant.
Of course, it is possible to be a "lone wolf," but playing this way is pointless. It does not bring measurable effects to our comrades, and we are exposed to fire and no resuscitation after receiving the ball. Joining a squad does not hurt, and many players will certainly facilitate command, not to mention that the commander will have more room for maneuver. One of the most important factors enhancing the team's power is marking the commander as a walking spawn. Just when choosing a place to spawn, press on a small, green dot and we already appear with our supervisor. It is obvious that he must live when we want to be reborn. That is why it is worth noting that the team leader is not just another soldier but a wandering hope. Hope, which will allow us to take our opponent's flag again without the need for a long journey to the battlefield.
The game's dynamics cannot be faulted. Provided, however, that the appropriate number of people are participating in the battle. We will see the full possibilities of the title for 32 players upwards. Then the real war begins. Shooting, helicopter duels (Cobra vs Havoc - for fans of the series "I have to participate in it"), bombing, explosions and even ordinary PvP duels. One would like to say "it's hard". Because it is. There is no 10 seconds for nothing to happen. If we don't die, our friends are 50 meters away. There is no camping. Each player who sits for more than a minute in one place is removed. Honey is seething in all clashes on the exposed surface. And it is quite fun to fight teams in cities. If I add that as many as 64 people can participate in the game, at this moment there should be a picture of hell in front of your eyes taking place on every map available in the game. In terms of game speed, the series has evolved very strongly. Like a doctor, DICE injected a stimulant into her mechanisms.
The audiovisual setting gives me mixed feelings. From the graphic side, the new Battlefield looks very good. I had the opportunity to test it on two cards from the Nvidia family - FX5600 and 6600GT. On the first one I could easily play on low details, and in some cases increase the level of details to medium. The number of displayed frames ranged from 30 to 50. However, with GT high settings gave a positive result and I enjoyed very nice textures. Like Battlefield 2 it goes on the FX5600, but I warn myself about the exceptions.
The game requires a graphics card that supports Pixel Shaders version 1.4 for proper operation. Sadly, the BF 2 will not run on the reasonably efficient GF 4 Titanium, despite the fact that this card would certainly handle the display of graphics. Views in the game are satisfactory, but they do not justify such requirements. A much greater obstacle for players will certainly be restrictions on the installed memory in the computer. Without 512 MB, it doesn't even make sense to think about buying a product. Comfort provides 1 GB, which will certainly become a standard in a few months. The musical setting looks worse. There's nothing to compare to the Vietnam soundtrack. Just a few songs kept in the eastern climate, which pass by my ear unnoticed. A matter of taste. But the sound presents a very high level. All the effects of shots, explosions and numerous commands sound right.
Battlefield 2 is focused mainly on online duels. Singleplayer mode allows you to fight with 16 bots on 10 boards limited quite significantly in relation to the maps prepared for the multiplayer. The intelligence level of computer opponents is fine, but there are no multi boards that could prove that the bot can not only shoot well, but also fly. There are 12 areas of activity and each of them is made aesthetically. The location of the action in the Middle East resulted in the appearance of the location. So we have desert areas plus jungle and grassland in China. The battlefields are so large that flying by helicopter is free. You have to adapt to aircraft control. Sometimes at too high a speed you can fly out of the board and get a warning from the command :-).
Some time has passed since the game's release, and EA has still not managed to increase the number of ranking servers. What are rankings? Points gained during the game add to the account, and their appropriate amount allows you to unlock additional weapons and promotion. An interesting idea, but for a Polish or French resident it is hard work. Suffice it to mention that European servers are over 10 times less than North American. Only the desperate will dare to play with lags and ping 500. And although it is not the fault of the program, it still captures our entertainment. The last disadvantage is the server search engine built into the game. Screw speed, instability - defects can be exchanged indefinitely. I hope the next patch will improve its performance.
Despite these few shortcomings, the game is divine. I am not afraid to use this statement. I have not had the opportunity to play such an exciting tactical shooter for a long time. For people looking for strong impressions and team play, it's a dream title. I invite individualists elsewhere. The work of gentlemen from DICE looks impressive, without a doubt the best Battlefield in the series. You don't have to worry about the game's vitality. Like mushrooms after rain should appear mods, new maps, weapons and game modes. I just hope that developers will not rest on their laurels and will constantly release patches, and then it will be almost perfect. It is a pity that with the whole atmosphere of success surrounding Battlefield , the originators of the second part, Trauma Studios, were treated so brutally.
